For Architects: Specifying Custom Printed Shades in Your Next Project

Designed for Your Workflow
We work with architects regularly, and we understand that specifying a custom printed product is different from choosing a standard catalog item. This guide covers everything you need to integrate OrangePiel products into your project documentation efficiently.
CSI Specification Format
We provide complete specifications in CSI MasterFormat Division 12 (Furnishings), Section 12 24 00 (Window Shading). Our spec package includes Part 1 (General), Part 2 (Products), and Part 3 (Execution) formatted for direct insertion into your project manual. We update these annually and can customize them for specific project requirements.
Our specs cover performance criteria including: UV resistance ratings, flame spread classifications (Class A, ASTM E84), light transmission values for each fabric type, colorfastness ratings, and dimensional tolerances.
Integration with BIM Workflows
We provide Revit families for our standard roller shade assemblies, including motorized and manual configurations with accurate geometry for inside-mount and outside-mount installations. The families include parametric dimensions that adjust to your specific opening sizes.
For projects using other BIM platforms, we can provide IFC files or detailed CAD drawings in DWG format. Our technical team is available for coordination meetings to ensure the shade assemblies integrate properly with your curtain wall details, ceiling pockets, or fascia conditions.
Lead Times and Project Scheduling
Standard lead time from approved proof to shipment is 3-4 weeks for most projects. Complex projects with large quantities or custom hardware may require 5-6 weeks. We recommend engaging us during the Design Development phase so we can coordinate on mounting details, electrical rough-in for motorized systems, and any ceiling pocket or fascia requirements that affect other trades.
For fast-track projects, we offer an expedited production option with a 2-week turnaround at a 20% premium.
Coordination with Other Trades
Motorized shade installations require coordination with electrical (low-voltage power and control wiring) and potentially with the building automation system integrator. We provide complete wiring diagrams and control specifications, and our team is available for coordination calls with your electrical engineer and controls contractor.
For ceiling-pocket-mounted shades, we provide detailed pocket dimension requirements including depth, width, and access requirements for maintenance. These dimensions should be coordinated with your ceiling contractor during the shop drawing phase.
Samples and Mockups
We provide free fabric samples in all available materials. For projects where the architect or owner wants to evaluate the printed product in context, we can produce a full-size printed sample shade for review—typically within one week of artwork approval.
For large commercial projects, we recommend a mockup installation in a representative space before full production begins. This allows the design team and owner to evaluate the product under actual conditions.
LEED and Sustainability Documentation
Our products can contribute to LEED credits in several categories. We provide documentation for: Materials and Resources (recycled content, regional materials), Indoor Environmental Quality (GREENGUARD Gold certification, low-emitting materials), and Energy and Atmosphere (daylighting optimization through light-filtering fabrics).
All documentation is provided in the format required by your LEED consultant.
Getting Started
The most efficient way to begin is to send us your window schedule and floor plans. We'll review the scope, provide preliminary budgeting, and identify any coordination items that should be addressed early in the design process. We're available for lunch-and-learns at your office, AIA-accredited continuing education presentations, or one-on-one project consultations.
Contact us at any stage of your project. The earlier we're involved, the smoother the integration.
Frequently Asked Questions
What specification format does OrangePiel provide for architectural projects?
We provide CSI MasterFormat specifications (Section 12 24 00 - Window Shading) ready for direct insertion into project manuals. Our specifications include product descriptions, performance requirements, fabric specifications, hardware details, and installation requirements. We also provide Revit families and IFC files for BIM documentation.
What is the typical specification and procurement timeline for custom printed shades?
For most commercial projects: specification development takes 1-2 weeks, artwork approval 1-2 weeks, production 4-6 weeks, and installation 1-2 weeks. Total timeline from initial specification to completed installation is typically 8-12 weeks. We recommend beginning the specification process during design development.
Can OrangePiel match specific color standards like Pantone, Benjamin Moore, or Sherwin Williams?
Yes. We color-match to Pantone (coated and uncoated), RAL, Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, and custom color references. Physical fabric proofs are provided for approval before production to verify color accuracy on the selected substrate.
What warranty does OrangePiel provide for commercial shade installations?
Our standard commercial warranty covers fabric printing (5 years against fading and delamination), operating hardware (5 years), and motors (5 years). Extended warranty options are available for hospitality and institutional projects. All warranties are backed by our direct manufacturer support.
